This former pub opened as a hostel in 1986

Initially operating under the YHA Enterprise scheme, Castle Acre Youth Hostel left the YHA in 1990 and operated independently as The Old Red Lion.  The Old Red Lion joined the Independent Hostel network in 1993 and was one of the hostels featured in the 1st edition (1993) of The Independent Hostel Guide.  The Old Red Lion, lovingly brought to life by the late Alison Loughlin, closed its books to new reservations in autumn 2025, and is awaiting a new lease of life.
