Gumber Bothy is a special kind of hostel, it has that traditional hostel charm reminiscent of days gone by. It provides simple, overnight accommodation or camping for walkers, horse riders and cyclists, just off the South Downs Way in West Sussex. There is no vehicular access to the site whatsoever for visitors, which makes Gumber Bothy the perfect tranquil place to escape to. Walk to Gumber Bothy, spend the night and then continue walking the next day.

Allen Banks and Staward Peel are just a short distance further down the valley from our location. The area is the largest area of ancient semi-natural woodland in Northumberland, with paths criss-crossing the almost 700 acres, with the river coursing through the middle. The Peel that stands above the river dates back to 1200’s and has connections to both the church and crown.

Harlow has a lot of interest for a hosteller

Harlow, like Milton Keynes, suffers from a false impression that, being a New Town it has little to interest the hosteller. This is not so! Harlow International is situated in the older part of the town, overlooking the extensive Town Park and within minutes of the River Stort. It’s handy for the station, a pleasant 5 minute walk along a quiet lane

The hostel offers cooked meals (if you so wish) or there’s a self catering kitchen if you would rather cook for yourself. There is also a hostel shop.

The friendly staff are happy to help you any way they can and a warm welcome is guaranteed. With London just a 30 min train ride away, and 50 mins to Stanstead Airport, Harlow International Hostel has a lot going for it.

On the former route of the Coast to Coast cycle route, it is all geared up for cyclists with a locked bike store. Bedding is provided, breakfasts can be ordered and evening meals are available locally. An ideal stop-over for cyclists or walkers exploring the area.

Toad Hall provides self-catering accommodation above the owner’s family home. There are 4 private bedrooms with fully made up beds. No bunks and no shared dormitories.
