Lying off the coast of north Northumberland, the Farne Islands offer a truly fascinating experience. Not only the home to number of breeding seabirds, including puffins, but also the pupping grounds to the second largest colony of grey seals in England. The islands are steeped in history too with stories of St. Cuthbert, who spent over 10 years living as a hermit on Inner Farne, and local heroine Grace Darling, who helped rescue survivors from the shipwrecked Forfarshire in 1838. Plenty to do, including beach sports, walking and climbing. There is a pub, coffee shop and bistro in the village all within a short walk. Ideal for an Easter get together.
Glyndwr’s Way passes through the centre of Machynlleth not far from the midpoint of the walk. Toad Hall, close to the train makes an ideal overnight stop. This budget accommodation has 3 private bedrooms, a bathroom and a self-catering kitchen, all situated above the owner’s family home. The small flat garden is ideal for camping and there’s a small workshop for bike repair/storage.

Gilfach Wen Barn is a bunkhouse on a working farm just half an hours drive from the Welsh end of the M4. With plenty of options for forest or hillside walks on the doorstep, or a short drive to reach local beaches, the brecon beacons national park or explore other areas of the Cambrian Mountains. There is a village pub and shop in walking distance and I can put you in contact with the local minibus company if you would like to head to other pubs, restaurants or clubs for an evening out.

There are great walking/running and cycling routes from the doorstep and a traditional pub serving bar snacks and meals at the end of the drive!

Red Kites are now common here as are raven, and we have a hen harrier’s nest. The waders, curlew, oystercatchers, & lapwing have arrived, and the black grouse will soon start lecking. Golden Eagles are spotted next door, in Glenclova, but rarely come over us here, in 70 years I’ve twice seen one in our glen. First time it was being buzzed by several buzzards & I suspect they may deter them, though the buzzards seem to fly happily with the red kites.
