The Roaches Bunkhouse has been transformed by major refurbishment
If you know this popular climbers’ bunkhouse on the Staffordshire edge of the Peak District of old, you’ll be truly amazed by it’s refurbishment. It is now divided into 2 self-contained lodges. One sleeps 25 and the other 9. These can be booked separately or together. The rooms have been imaginatively organised with a mix of custom built pod-bunks and singles. There’s underfloor heating, private parking and much more to recommend a stay. The larger lodge opens in April, the smaller one in July. Sure to be popular, book early to avoid missing out.

Adventures most definitely begin at Alstonefield Camping Barn. Gather a group of like minded souls, bring your camping equipment and hunker down in this delightful stone barn situated in the middle of a field away from neighbours. There’s a wood burning stove to keep you warm, a food prep area with kitchen units & washing up sink as well as an internal WC and hand basin. With the stunning Manifold Valley on the doorstep and a pub you can walk to, you are guaranteed a night or two to remember.
Run by the Village
In addition to running the Camping Barn, the small but thriving community of Downham offers visitors an acclaimed gastro pub with rooms, the Assheton Arms; a delightful tearoom at Greendale View on the approach to the village from Chatburn; and, during the summer months and in fine weather, a friendly ice cream shop near the village car park and green. The Assheton family is responsible for the village and its surrounding estate. The manor has been in the family’s ownership since 1558 and has passed through a direct male line of the Asshetons since 1680.
Beds Galore & Whisky Galore this August at Campbeltown Backpackers
With beds still available for most August days, Campbeltown Backpackers, on the Kintyre Peninsular on the west coast of Scotland, deserves to be on your ‘places to stay this summer’ list. A hostel with a difference close to the Antrim Coast in Northern Ireland
This is a hostel with a difference. Ballyeamon Barn has its own “session house” where visitors have the chance to meet local musicians and singers during regular sessions of storytelling and music, free and open to all.
Owner Liz Weir hosts groups of visitors who want to experience the “real” Northern Ireland, meet the locals and feel part of the community. They do so within the rich culture and scenic beauty of the Glens of Antrim- with its folklore, music and dance.
Liz also offers storytelling workshops and can arrange local walking guides, horse riding, yoga and ‘pamper’ sessions for visitors. You will leave with lots of stories!

The Montane Winter Spine Challenger North is a non-stop, 160 mile race along the Pennine Way from Hardraw to Kirk Yetholm. This is a truly demanding race that gives you an opportunity to take on the northern section of the full race route. Beginning from Hardraw in North Yorkshire, runners have a time limit of 108 hours to get to the finish line at the infamous village of Kirk Yetholm in the Scottish Borders.
