National Landscapes is the new name for designated Areas of Outstanding Natural Beauty (AONB) in England and Wales. In Scotland, National Scenic Areas perform the same role.
These are stunning areas of the coutryside which are protected under the 1949 National Parks and Access to Countryside Act. National Landscape have the same legal protection as national parks, but they don’t have their own authorities for planning control like national parks do.
There are 46 National Landscapes in the UK and over 50 hostels and bunkhouses within them. Hostel style accommdation gives great value access to the heart of the National Landscapes, reducing polution from repeated day trips and ensuring people of all means can afford an overnight stay in these stunning landscapes.

The falling tides expose wide stretches of sand and salt marsh giving a sense of remoteness. The area has a rich historical heritage associated with its position on the Scottish border, the frontier of the Roman Empire, and a World Heritage Site. This is enjoyed by walkers and cyclists on the Hadrian’s Cycleway, the England Coast Path and Hadrian’s Wall Path National Trail. Hillside Farm Bunkbarn provides low-cost access to the National Landscape and overnight stays for people on the Trails.
