Crookstone Barn, a remote bunkbarn in the Peak District
Wonderfully remote and completely off-grid, the barn can only be reached on foot. It's approx 3 miles from the village of Hope, which has a range of shops, pubs, cafes and a train station. Each group will be met on their first day by one of the Trust's volunteers in the Trust's Land Rover in Hope. Bags, equipment and the group leader will be driven to the Barn. Once there you'll be given instructions on using the generator etc. You'll be collected again by one of the volunteers in the Land Rover at the end of your stay.
Advertised for the first time since it opened for youth groups in 1992, Crookstone Barn accommodates groups of up to 23 in 4 comfortable rooms, most with single beds. There's a large well-equipped kitchen with gas oven, gas and electric hobs and large work surfaces. There are separate male & female washrooms, with toilets, showers and constant hot water. Both sitting room and dining room have plenty of seating and are kept toasty warm by log burning stoves. (Logs are provided).
Outside there's a large enclosed grassy area and stunning views in every direction.
Youth groups, community projects and family groups are all welcome (no rowdy party groups please). We're particularly keen to hear from under privileged groups & charities for whom we may be able to offer the barn free of charge. Please get in touch if you feel you may qualify.

News & Offers from Crookstone Barn
From train to barn in 3.5 miles
January 18th 2025
Hope train station is the perfect starting point for your Crookstone Barn adventure! After exiting platform 2 straight into a field it’s (almost) nothing but open space and a steady walk on easy paths with stunning views across to The Great Ridge as you go
Trust volunteer Tim set out last weekend, with snow still on the ground and clear blue skies, on a walk that took about 1.5 hours. The path heads out across fields towards the hamlet of Aston with the craggy summit of Win Hill ahead. You briefly follow a small road (Free Range Lane) towards Edge Farm before heading off left on a muddy track (Ruin Edge Lane), curving round the lower slopes of Win Hill towards Wooler Knoll. It’s at this point that your destination comes into view – the little copse on the far hillside below the Kinder Plateau (see photo). From here it’s an easy walk following the old Roman road to Hope Cross with the barn straight ahead.
Fancy a challenge for 2025?
December 24th 2024
Our barn is the perfect place to set off on the 18 mile Kinder Perimeter Challenge walk, with 2,700 feet of ascent and spectacular view every step of the way.
There are many options for a circular walk around the Kinder Plateau, but most start from Edale, so straight away you’re facing a stiff 2 mile, 1,200 foot climb to get to the plateau plus you’ll be on some of the busiest paths in the whole of the Peak District! Crookstone Barn, however, is less than a mile from the summit at Crookstone Out Moor (515m) with little more than 500 feet of ascent, plus you’re away from the tourist crowd . From here you can choose to head west with views across to the Lose Hill and Mam Tor and down into the Hope Valley, slowly ascending to the summit at Kinder Low (633m), then north to the magnificent Kinder Downfall then on to Sandy Heys. From here it is pretty much a straight walk east along the northern edge of Kinder with Black Ashop Moor below, bearing south briefly at Fairbrook Naze before continuing along Seal Edge and Blackden Edge until you arrive back at Crookstone Out Moor.

How a remote, off-grid Peak District stone barn became a unique hostel
January 8th 2025
Vision, passion and sheer hard work by volunteers from the Crookstone Adventure Trust have turned an isolated stone barn in the Peak District into hostel accommodation for groups who would not normally have chance to experience the outdoors. To fund this aim, fee paying groups of outdoor enthusiasts, clubs, friends and families are welcome to stay and experience this unique off-grid location.
