Fabulous Wild Swimming Spots for You!
On a hot summer day, wild swimming can feel like the perfect escape. As the sun beats down and the air shimmers with heat, the cool water of a lake, river, or secluded waterfall pool offers instant relief.

Stepping into the water sends a refreshing chill through your body, washing away the warmth of the day. Surrounded by nature, with birds singing overhead and gentle breezes rustling through the trees, every swim feels peaceful and invigorating. The contrast between the golden sunshine and the crystal-clear water creates a sense of freedom and adventure that is difficult to find elsewhere, making wild swimming one of the most enjoyable ways to experience hot weather.

Graeme is a natural born swimmer and in the past he’s completed several Iso-Man challenges, where the swim is the longest distance in the triathlon. After many years of swimming in the North Sea, some of his favourite wild swimming spots are in the Welsh lake such as is Llyn Dinas. The clear glass, calming waters calling to get in for a long swim rather than the rough tides. Despite being colder than swimming in the North Sea, Bala Lake is his local favourite – the deepest lake in Wales!
Graeme gets straight in and is off! I slowly step in, wearing more clothes than Graeme, (a wet suit, probably gloves and a hat too). He’s already a fair distance into the lake, while I’m messing about thinking with each step the water will get warmer. It doesn’t. I feel the chill of the water climbing up my legs, until the lake is deep that I give in and swim. A little scream seeps out of my mouth – chilly but beautiful! Graeme’s already 100m ahead of me.

It is not just a swim, but a full-blown sensory experience that leaves you feeling both invigorated and calm.
Gliding through the water immersed in the mountain scenery that surrounds you or floating gazing at the vast expanse of sky above you before plunging your face into the water muffles everyday noises, replacing them with the soothing underwater acoustics of flowing currents. It does all sound a little chilly but it’s worth it.
Here are two beautiful locations we visit for Wild Swimming.
Rhiwagor Waterfall, Lake Vyrnwy
A short circular walk to the base of the waterfall. The dramatic falls pours into a section of river, which becomes a gentle flow before reaching Lake Vyrnwy. The falls cascade down the steps of rock, providing a captivating scene. Some scrambling to reach the pools especially the highest pool at the top. On reaching the first of many pools, it’s possible to swim. Try to wait as there are better pools higher up.
The final waterfall pool is stunning! It offers a unforgettable view, where you can peek over the edge admiring the views down across the valley – your own natural infinity pool!
Llyn Tegid, Bala
Starting your swim from Llangower beach ensures a quieter start to your swim & a less busy spot. There are a few pebbles on the shore but it’s an open expanse and clear water to easily access the water.
Bala Lake is the jewel in the crown, it is Wales’ largest natural lake. 3 ½ miles long and 140 feet deep. Surrounded by the beautiful Aran, Arenig and Berwyn mountain ranges, the lake has superb views and plenty of wildlife you may spot during your swim. It is very popular with distance swimmers and hosts an extremely popular annual event -The Big Bala swim. The Big Bala Swim offers 1.5km, 4.5km, and 9km distances.
