Never swim alone. Tell someone where you’re going and when you’ll be back.

Enter cold water slowly to avoid cold water shock, and take time to control your breathing. Long deep breaths!

Know how to get out before you get in! Always plan your exit point as steep banks can be slippery.

If in trouble, float on your back, try to stay calm and control your breathing – panicking will only make things worse.

Get out immediately if you feel confused, numb, or uncontrollably cold.

Whether you’re looking to take a quick dip in a secluded river or immerse yourself in a weekend of lake-side serenity, there’s a wide range of places to stay accross the UK that cater specifically to those drawn to natural waters.
When wild swimming, prioritize safety by avoiding swimming alone, checking water conditions and weather, and being aware of cold water shock. Always tell someone your plans, wear appropriate clothing like a wetsuit, and consider using a tow float for visibility. It’s also crucial to know your limits and avoid swimming in fast-flowing water or after drinking alcohol. Never jump into water unless you know its deep enough, also be very cautious of cold water shock. Its much safer to ease yourself gentle into cold water.
