Carsington Water and Visitor Centre (10 miles away) has enough to entertain all the family for a couple of full days. There is a circular 8 mile walk/cycle route around the reservoir and cycles can be hired on site. The 750 acre reservoir is well stocked with trout for fly fishing. Boats can be hired and tuition booked. The beautiful crystal clear water is also very popular with fans of watersports. You can book sessions sailing, windsurfing, paddle boarding or kayaking. If that isn’t enough to keep you busy, you’ll find a huge outdoor play area and a number of bird hides from which you can watch the wide variety of water birds that frequent the reservoir. With plenty of mowed grassland, picnic tables and a large indoor visitor centre with shops and cafes you will be spoilt for choice as to how best to spend your day there. If you fancy some horse riding on your mini break, Northfield Trekking Centre at Flash near Buxton ( 11 miles away) offers a range of trekking option for riders of all abilities (aged 8 upwards), including complete beginners.

Alstonefield is also an easy 10 mile drive to the quaint market town of Ashbourne, with it’s many unusual shops, cafes and interesting Georgian architecture.
If you are looking for level, family friendly, off-road cycling or walking close by, Tissington Trail fits the bill. A disused railway has been converted into a multi-user trail with access points at the old stations. From Alstonefield the nearest access point is at Alsop Station just 3.5 miles away. There’s cycle hire on the trail at Parsley Hay (6 miles) or Mappleton (9miles). For your second day of easy cycling the Manifold Trail starts just 4 miles away at Hulme End.
