Millport is situated on the magical island of Cumbrae, just off the western shore of mainland Scotland in the Firth of Clyde. Despite being on an island and feeling wonderfully remote, it is remarkably accessible, just 1.5 hours from Glasgow with excellent ferry, road, rail, and air connections and is only a 10-minute ferry ride from Largs on the mainland. Millport offers the best of both worlds, a stunning island landscape experience with the convenience of the mainland. Surrounded by breathtaking coastal scenery, with views across the sea to the mainland and neighbouring islands, the centre provides the perfect environment for exploring and offers a perfect break away with access to a whole range of services and amenities, its tranquil island setting invites everyone to re-connect with nature.
Originally established as a marine research station, Millport Field Centre provides an outstanding base for marine studies, environmental projects and outdoor learning, with expert staff able to support a wide range of activities. A popular choice for groups seeking adventure, team building, relaxation, and a connection with nature. Our qualified tutors and trusted activity partners can provide engaging educational experiences for both adults and children (subject to availability), these are chargeable and must be booked in advance. Available year-round, the centre offers both catered and self-catered accommodation options. Guests can choose from bed and breakfast, full-board packages, or exclusive hire of the entire property on either a catered or self-catered basis. Ingredients are sourced locally wherever possible, and most dietary requirements can be catered for. Self-catering is only offered to groups that hire out the whole centre.
The centre is situated on the seafront but surrounded by green areas on all other sides with 2 large grass areas, benches, and outdoor tables. It has great eco credentials with a biomass boiler, a green roof and energy-saving lighting throughout. It sleeps up to 154 guests in 64 comfortable single, twin or triple en-suite bedrooms across two separate buildings, making it ideal for both small and large groups. Two en-suite disabled bathrooms, 16 bedrooms are wheel-chair accessible and there are several ground floor rooms that have wheelchair access too. Additional facilities include a lecture theatre (seating up to 150 people), dining room (seating 90 people), 3 sitting/common rooms with board games and a pool table, 4 laboratories and 3 multi-purpose teaching rooms (including the lecture theatre), 2 drying rooms, free Wi-fi and parking, bike racks, 2 campfire sites with seating and a solid BBQ, spacious communal areas and a commercial kitchen (available for self-catering groups only).

Take the M8 from Glasgow then the A737 and then the A760 which takes you directly to Largs. Many guests choose to leave their car in Largs, either in the car park on the main promenade next to the ferry port (use postcode KA30 8LZ) or on one of the back roads near the ferry terminal. For those who choose to bring their cars or coaches over on the ferry; when you come onto the island turn left, and stay on the coast road (do not take the right turn directing you into Millport 400m from the ferry). Stay on this road for 3 km and the centre is the first set of buildings you will see as you come into a 30mph zone.Public Transport :
Trains from Glasgow to Largs. The ferry is 100m from Largs station. The ferry takes 10 minutes, once on the Isle of Cumbrae there will be a bus waiting. The bus stops outside the centre.Walks :
