Overview

National Trust owned Holme Wood Bothy offers basic accommodation in a spectacular secluded location, just a few metres from the shore of Loweswater. This stone tent provides a roof, kitchen area and sleeping platform and visitors are advised to bring their own equipment, as for camping, such as plates, matches, sleeping mats and sleeping bags, etc. If you are looking for a remote and basic getaway with easy access to the lake, Holme Wood Bothy is the perfect choice. The bothy has a small open plan kitchen/dining area with wood-burning stove (initial wood supply provided) and table/benches. A gas ring cooker (gas provided) is available. There is a communal sleeping area on wooden flooring in a separate room, split on two levels with the upper area accessed by a wooden ladder. Outside there is a composting toilet. The cold tap is not drinking water but this is available outside the ranger's workshop at Watergate Farm. Loweswater is great for canoeing- bring your own canoes. Holme Wood Bothy

Over looked by the craggy peaks and moorlands and bound on two sides by water…

Holme Wood Bothy on Watergate Fram, Loweswater in the English Lakes.

What a great place. Unselfconsciously defining itself as a bothy or ‘stone tent’ it is proudly simple accommodation. It has an open plan kitchen dining room downstairs featuring a gas ring, woodburning stove and single tap as well as a shared sleeping area upstairs which is accessed by a ladder, and a composting toilet outside. Some will be thrilled by the adventure of it all and the ‘close to nature-ness’ of it. And, yes you do have to bring all your own gear – just as if you were camping.

But let’s get on to the real joy of staying in a bothy: the landscape. They are alyways in amazing locations. This one is near Loweswater village which lies on a flat stretch of land between the lake of Loweswater and Crummockwater. It is very much a road less travelled. Over looked by the craggy peaks and moorlands and bound on two sides by water, you’ll be itching to stride out and explore. Walking, climbing, canoeing, cycling: its a perfect spot for all those and more besides.

The site is managed by The National Trust, so you’ll be sure its well looked after. The landscape, though is yours to enjoy.
