Rural bunkhouse in the Conwy Valley in Snowdonia

At an elevation of 290m (950ft) in the foothills of Snowdonia, with direct access to many paths and tracks leading to the mountains of the Carneddau range, with its seven peaks over 3000 feet, Bron-y-Gader Bunkhouse has an enviable position.

Remote and isolated, yet just 8 miles from the bustling town of Conwy, 10 miles from Betws-y-Coed and 2 miles from the village of Tal-y-bont with its pub and shop. Owned by small registered charity, the Blackburn & District Outdoor Pursuits Centre Trust, the bunkhouse is run entirely by volunteers and offers great value accommodation for groups of up to 37 across 6 rooms. All groups have sole use of the bunkhouse which has a fully equipped stainless steel kitchen, a small dining room seating 12 and a large hall which doubles as a dining & socialising room for large groups and as an activity room. There’s a separate cosy living room with a wood burner and there is also a well equipped drying room.

BYO sleeping bags, pillows and logs for the wood burner. Dogs welcome by prior arrangement.

News & Offers from Bron-y-Gader Bunkhouse

50th Anniversary of the opening of Bron-y-Gader on 4th May 2024

February 22nd 2024

We are holding an Open Afternoon on the day to mark this momentous occasion. Anyone who has been involved as a volunteer helper, user or is simply interested is invited to come and see how the centre has developed from the derelict hill farm in Snowdonia that the Blackburn & District Outdoor Pursuits Centre Trust bought in 1969.

We will be providing afternoon tea (ByG style) and to help us with catering numbers please email us at [email protected] if you wish to come along.

The Blackburn & District Outdoor Pursuits Centre Trust was set up to develop low cost accommodation in an area that would enable young people to experience the joys of the countryside and provide a base for Duke of Edinburgh’s Award expedition training.
From 1969 until Bron-y-Gader was officially opened 1974, volunteers worked alongside contractors to convert the original shippon and stables into basic accommodation sleeping 21 people in 3 tier bunks with gas lighting and heating and with water extracted from the nearby stream.
In the 50 years since its opening many changes have been made and the centre now accommodates 37.
People are invited to come and have a look and hopefully meet up with past friends.
