Remote camping barn near Dovedale offering budget group accommodation

Located on a working farm near Alstonefield on the Derbyshire Staffordshire border, Alstonefield camping barn is near Dovedale, Hartington, Leek and Ashbourne. A perfect base to visit Alton Towers or spend the day exploring the wonderful Manifold Valley with a short climb up to the very popular Thor's Cave, then treat yourself at the nearby Wetton Mill Tearooms.

The barn stands in a meadow, off the beaten track, and has phenomenal views. It is great for quiet parties (but not stag and hen), friends get-togethers, team building events and has on numerous occasions been used as a small film location. The barn welcomes families, couples wanting to get away from it all and adventure groups.

The barn is close to Manifold and Tissington off road trails for cyclists, Ramshaw Rocks for climbers and for those who enjoy water sports it is a 20 minute drive from Carsington Water. Also ideal for walkers, schools, DofE and scouts. Perfect for star gazers!

This is camping in the comfort of a remote cosy barn. You need to bring usual camping equipment including camping mats or blow up air bed, sleeping bags, cooking stove and fuel, pots and pans, crockery and cutlery. As there is no electricity, you will also need to bring torches and flat safety night/tea light candles and logs for the WOODBURNING STOVE.

Sorry no shower, but the washroom (with fully plumbed in toilet and hand wash basin) is in the barn itself so you do not have to venture outside to use the wc.

Parking on site. Pubs doing food within walking distance, around a mile.

Holiday cottages, sole use group camping (ideal for D of E), and glamping wagon also available at Gateham Grange. Visit Website for details.

News & Offers from Alstonefield Camping Barn

Off grid, remote and peaceful, the perfect place to get back to basics

January 8th 2026

Do you like an adventure? If so our Camping barn, located nr Alstonefield in the beautiful Peak District National Park, could be just right for your Winter Escape. Get together with a group of likeminded people (sleeps 12 and at £132 per night its very good value – sole use bookings only please) and start making plans now. The barn has a cosy woodburning stove downstairs, but with no heating upstairs you do need to be hardy to stay at this time of year. Bring lots of warm blankets, warm clothes, and hot water bottles and you will be fine. Bring all your usual camping equipment too.

January weekends are full up now (mainly repeat guests) but there is still availability mid-week and in February there are some weekends left. There are three lovely pubs around a mile away serving lovely food (best to book)

Bookings are really taking off now for the rest of the year, check out the Instant Book calendar on our website below, read all the reviews, and book now for a holiday to remember.

Our barn is ideal for all sorts of campers: Families and Friends, walking, climbing and cycling groups (Manifold Cycle Trail is just down the road), Scouts and Duke of Edinburgh and School Groups. Its been used as a basic venue for corporate bookings for team building and many university students have used it as a venue for film making. It is also a popular choice for just a couple wanting to switch off from the hassles of a hectic life. The barn has no electricity, but we believe that this adds to its charm.

For larger groups/family get togethers it is often booked in conjunction with our holiday cottage and/or our sole use basic camping field. A group has just booked our camping field for a weekend in August along with the barn, planning to use the large upstairs communal room for Yoga!

With February half term coming up and Easter not far off why not book a family break now. On our doorstep is Dovedale (famous for its stepping stones) and Thors Cave in the Manifold Valley is very popular. Within each reach are Alton Towers, the Heights of Abraham with cable car at Matlock and The Peak Wildlife Park where you can see many animals and if you want to get up and close you can book an experience to meet Polar Bears, Arctic Fox, Lemurs and Meerkats too! Sudbury Hall and Museum of Childhood is well worth a visit for all the family.

I can do a discount for midweek (out of school holiday) dates in Jan and Feb, please ask

The winter wonderland photo was sent to me by a group who stayed at the camping barn in January last year and we are looking forward to seeing them again in a couple of weeks!
