Over 20% of the hostels and bunkhouses in the Independent Hostel network are run by charities, community interest companies or on a not-for-profit basis.

Hostels and bunkhouses run by charities

The charities and community organisations offering hostel-style accommodation are wonderfully diverse.

An increasing number of village halls now provide simple overnight stays for walkers, youth groups, and DofE groups, using the proceeds to help cover the costs of maintaining these essential community spaces. Similarly, some scout groups offer their facilities to other groups for a modest fee.

Outdoor pursuit organisations—such as climbing, caving, and mountaineering clubs—often open their bunkhouses to non-members for a fee, helping to sustain their activities.

Additionally, many charities and trusts are dedicated to inspiring underprivileged children and youth groups from urban areas to experience and develop a love for the countryside. These organisations frequently include outdoor pursuits, offering young people the chance to challenge themselves both physically and mentally in a safe and supportive environment. Once again, welcoming fee-paying guests plays a key role in funding these meaningful charitable initiatives.
