In the rush of everyday life, it’s easy to miss the finer details that make the countryside so special. The ever-changing colours of a sunrise or sunset, a bee drifting from flower to flower, its tiny legs dusted with golden pollen, the moments when there is complete stillness, complete hush. The dawn chorus as a new day begins to a night sky filled with stars can so easily go unnoticed. Our shepherd’s hut offers a chance to slow down, take a breath, and rediscover the simple beauty that’s been there all along.
At the weekend, Graeme and I saw the beauty of the finer details – two fledglings.
We popped to the wood shed to chop logs and kindling for guests when Graeme noticed them. Cute. Fluffy. Fragile. They had already showed their natural instinct as they’d moved a small distance from their nest and were perched on the edge, soaking in the warmth of the sunlight shining between the slats. We quietly closed the door, took a distant seat and watched. Chopping logs and making kindling for our guests could wait.
Mum appeared her tail bobbing up and down and we watched as she relentlessly flew back and to feeding them. It wasn’t long before one hopped through the wooden boards onto the drive near mum and with little hops had an explore under mum’s watchful eye. The second quickly popped through too and with the encouragement of mum and their sibling they hopped away down the drive. We haven’t seen them since, they’re most likely taking their first tentative adventures.
