Over 20% of the hostels and bunkhouses in the Independent Hostel network are run by charities, community interest companies or on a not-for-profit basis.
The types of charities and community organisations running hostel style accommodation are very varied.
A growing number of village halls offer simple overnight accommodation to walkers, youth groups, DofE groups etc to help fund the running costs of these vital community buildings. Some scout groups now allow other groups to use their accommodation for a modest fee.
Various outdoor pursuit organisations (eg. climbing, caving, mountaineering clubs and societies) open their bunkhouses to fee paying non-members.
Many other charities and trusts want to encourage underprivileged children and youth groups from towns and cities to experience and gain a love for the countryside. Outdoor pursuits are often included, allowing young people to challenge themselves physically & mentally in a safe environment. Once again fee-paying guests are welcomed to use their accommodation to help fund these charitable aims.
