Widely known as Hartland, Elmscott was opened by the YHA in 1948

Converted from an isolated country school building, which the YHA bought from Devon Educational Authorities, Elmscot was run by the YHA for 59 years until 2007, when it went into private hands and was run under the enterprise scheme. Still run as an Enterprise hostel it joined the Independent Hostel network in 2009
