I have always half-dreamed of walking behind a waterfall, deafened by water thundering down as I hide behind the curtain of sound. I think it dates from a Tarzan movie I saw as a child!
My dream came true in an unexpected place in the Brecon Beacons. Intrigued by the name Henrhyd Falls near the extraordinary CRAIG Y NOS CASTLE, where we had stayed in a bunkhouse the previous night, a group of friends and I thought we should take a peak.
A steep but easy path leads from a good car park near Coelbren to an amazing place. A proper big noisy waterfall cascading into a perfect pool, set in a valley of trees…and with a path leading around the back of the waterfall to a cave where you can shelter as the water tumbles around you. Wow! Deafening, invigorating, refreshing!
The only thing missing was a twisted vine rope to swing on as I called to the animals…but maybe some parts of dreams are better not coming true?
You can do this walk to. There and back is only one mile and if you don’t fancy the wet rocks behind the waterfall there is a fabulous viewing platform at its base.
