The North Pennines is referred to as the last wilderness in England, whilst that might well be true there are still numerous things to see and enjoy in the small quiet villages nestled away in the various valleys.
Time to Spring into action for some new adventures in a location off the beaten track but ideally placed to get to many other areas.
Carrshield Camping Barn is a beautiful location to base yourself in to explore the beautiful Allen Valleys and the North Pennines AONB and Hadrian’s Wall. The Lake District is in one direction and the gorgeous Northumberland coast in the other, both of which are only 60 to 90 minutes away.
There are walks, runs and cycle routes from the door that will take you around the immediate area. For those looking for a challenge, the Long Distance Footpath Issac’s Tea Trail passes close by; it may be only 36 miles long but, it is full of history, amazing views, tranquil valleys and wildlife. Use our location to either do the whole route or just sections that look appealing.
A short drive away towards the end of the Allen Valley is the National Trust Allen Banks and Staward Peel, a real hidden treasure of the area. Wander along the banks of the River Allen, listening to the water and birds. Then ascend the slopes up to the old fortified farmhouse that withstood the Border Reivers. The view from the ridge is stunning!
There has been a strong connection with mining for many centuries; the Camping Barn is an old Mine Shop dating back to the 1700s. Nearby at Nenthead and Killhope, there are mining museums where you can understand what conditions were like back then.
In the local villages, you will find art and craft centres as well as cafes and pubs to refresh you for the next part of your adventure in England’s last wilderness. There is even a model village in nearby Nenthead.
The wild birds such as Curlew and Golden Plover will soon be returning to the high moors for the breeding season, with their calls reverberating around the fells and valleys. So book yourself a break with us to enjoy the wonderful location.
