Summer mini-break at Rookhow Bunkbarn, Lake District

kids at rookhow in the woods

Escape to a quiet corner of the Lake District with 12 acres of woodland to yourselves! Go for a wild swim in High Dam, mountain bike trails in Grizedale, an ice cream at Fell Foot, Windermere and settle back to Rookhow to toast your marshmallows round the campfire.

Plenty to do around Rookhow- ride on a steam train at Haverthwaite (15min drive), visit the Laurel and Hardy Museum in Ulverston (20mins) or take the car to walk Coniston Old Man (30min drive). Leave the car at Rookhow and walk straight from the door up to High Dam for a picnic and wild swim (5 miles round trip) or Grizedale to the visitor centre via the sculpture trail (7 miles there and back).
Some people love Rookhow’s woods so much that they just stay on site- playing hide and seek games behind the trees, ball games on the big lawn or lounging in the sun outside the Bunkbarn. The perfect sole use venue for a few families together or an extended family. The yurt in the woods is a favourite for bedtime stories or for sleeping over and waking to the sound of owls and birds. Space to camp too.
