A group of friends who needed a treat set out to Bretton Hostel to have a Peak District Adventure. We knew the hostel to be an pleasant short walk from the famous village of Eyam where courageous villagers quarantined themselves when Plague struck. Our visit to this village did not disappoint – we learned so much about the sacrifices made and the suffering of the Eyam community as they were struck down by disease.
In the evening, on the advice of a friend, we had booked a meal at Stella’s kitchen. We had been told that our host would serve us a three-course meal in the conservatory adjoining her house, but we did not know much else about what to expect!
Our meal was fantastic. Stella welcomes you to her home with amazing Afro-Caribbean cuisine, cooked to her own recipes and served with a liberal pinch of her wonderful hospitality and humour. We were treated to salt fish and courgette fritters as a starter, with dipping sauces to accompany them. The main course was a huge buffet of deliciousness: Sweet Potato and Chick Pea Curry, Abakwa Chicken, Fish Curry, Rice and Beans, Fried Plantains…and then there was dessert of mango crumble!!
You are invited to take your own wine or beer with you, Stella provides water and a delicious fruit punch.
After a fascinating day looking round the very traditional village of Eyam, the contrast and colour of Stella’s kitchen was a complete joy. So wonderful to enjoy vibrant fresh ideas which flourish alongside a village that celebrates the tradition and history of Derbyshire. What a lovely adventure we had and Bretton hostel made it all possible.
