Got days when it’s too hot to walk the hills, you can access some interesting history down the road from All Stretton Bunkhouse
Acton Burnell is the site of the first Parliament, held in 1283. King Edward 1st allowed commoners to attend as well as nobles. It was probably never a fortification but designed to impress by Robert Purnell (Chancellor of England and Bishop of Bath and Wells) The ruins are well worth a visit, just 8 miles from the bunkhouse.
If you’re looking for less ruins and more facilities, visit Stokesey Castle – a well preserved, medieval, fortified house built in 1281. Alongside the house there is a tea room and there are activities for kids. A bit further afield but the bus runs from Church Stretton.
If you are still game for a walk and it’s hot – hike out early from the bunkhouse to Caer Caradoc to see the Iron Age Fort and search for the cave below the summit. Somewhere inside lies the cauldron of Diwrnach containing the treasures of Britain and a magic sword!
