Low Gillerthwaite Field Centre offers an opportunity to be energised too by the peace, isolation and beauty.
Set in the heart of beautiful Ennerdale, England’s remotest, quietest and least inhabited valley, the Field Centre has to do things a little differently. A reviewer on face book says, “…if you’re after being “off the grid” for a while and enjoying all the lakes have to offer, this is the place for you…” The centre is self sufficient – it generates its own hydroelectricity and uses borehole water. Adding to the ‘off-grid’ credentials is the patchy or absent mobile phone reception.
If, like me, you’re the sort of person who thinks this sounds like heaven-on-earth, then perhaps you’d also be drawn to one of their dark sky discovery events. The Field Centre’s location is its most valuable asset if you’re looking for a place miles from light pollution.
Originally a 15th century farmhouse, the centre has group self-catering facilities, drying room, a library of environmental books, a large barn for indoor activities (ideal for barn dances), a group lecture room and two lounges with log-burning fires. This place is good for the solo walker all the way up to groups of about 40 people.
