7km from the Mountain Biking the Coast to Coast

If you have a support vehicle (or fancy a famous road climb) then Chapel Gallery Bunkhouse in Wensleydale is a great option to stay at when you are doing the Mountain Bike Coast to Coast. To get to Hawes you have to drive for 7km (or bike if you have the legs for it) over the infamous Buttertubs Pass. With 350m elevation and spectacular views down Swaledale, then over to Ingleborough, and down Wensleydale, it is a stunning route.

This pass featured in the 2014 Tour De France – and with an average gradient of 10% one way and 9% the other way, it is pretty tough (as this includes some downhill sections!)

But when you arrive in Hawes, you’ll be welcomed with safe storage for your bikes inside the bunkhouse, under floor heating throughout, 3 really good showers, comfy sofas and a very good drying room. Also in Hawes we have 4 pubs to choose from, a couple of general stores – and many places to get a good breakfast in the morning. If needed though, we are directly opposite Stage 1 Cycles for any repairs or maintenance (or new kit).

We are only 7 miles from the off road route – however between us and 7 miles away is 350m elevation on road. Although it is one of the famous and well known hill climbs “The Buttertubs” (they did it in the Tour De Yorkshire in 2013)
