Each August there is a scarecrow festival in Kettlewell, it is a really great event when everyone who lives in the area creates a scarecrow for outside their house! As both Floss and Saul, owners of Kettlewell Hostel, are creative types they make a big deal out of it!
The hostel has a really nice little bookshop, so they make literary themed scarecrows. In the first year they did the Giraffe, the Pelly and Me, then The Lion the witch and the Wardrobe (hence the lion in the Garden). You may be able to make out a monkey in the background too. In 2018 the whole street turned in to a huge circus, Kettlewell Hostel provided a full sized Elephant (currently protecting the bike shed!) and the Seal now sitting in the garden. They replaced all 42 pillows in the hostel and used the old ones to stuff the elephant and seal !
