The coastal town of Dunbar is located 30 miles east of Edinburgh (accessible by direct train and bus routes). The Dolphin Inn hostel is located right in the heart of the conservation area with the High Street, harbours, beach and museums all in walking distance. The town is a wonderful base for walking and cycling with its coastal location and easy access to the relatively undiscovered Lammermuir Hills rising behind the town with trails for both walking and cycling day trips. There are also a number of adventure activity providers in the area for those who want to make the most of its outdoor location including surfing, coasteering and wakeboarding (perfect for family holidays).
Dunbar is still a relatively unknown destination in Scotland, it is a short distance from its better known neighbour North Berwick but has its own charm and many similar characteristics. Visitors often discover Dunbar on a stop off on travels northwards as the town sits on the east coast between Edinburgh and the English town of Berwick Upon Tweed. It is peculiarly well connected for a small coastal town being alongside the A1 and on the East Coast Mainline (London is approx 4 hours by rail). There are also regular buses between Edinburgh, Berwick Upon Tweed and North Berwick.
Dunbar has an enormous number of activities and attractions for a town of its size and its easy access to Edinburgh makes it an attractive and inexpensive base for visiting the capital city. There is more than enough in the town for a fulfilling holiday with Belhaven Brewery tours, John Muir’s Birthplace Museum, Chocolate workshops, Outdoor Sauna at Foxlake and Alpaca Trekking providing a compliment to adventure activities and browsing the High Street’s independent shops and local restaurants. The town also boasts an excellent swimming pool, tennis courts and two golf courses.
Autumn and Winter months also feature the Dunbar Open Studios week-end (16-18 October) and the famous Christmas lights (late November through to early January).
