Have you ever wondered what inspired Wainwright ?

Have you ever wondered why Wainwright gave up his job in Blackburn and came to live in Kendal and write walking guides.

Orrest Head, on the eastern shores of Windermere, is the first fell that  Wainwright climbed.  The walk has stunning  views of Lake Windermere and the Coniston Fells, no wonder Wainwright was inspired.   You can walk up Orrest Head too.  There is a well marked path and it is only a 5 minute walk to the trail from Winderemere railway station.   First  drop your bags at Kendal Hostel and take a quick hop on a train, or if there are 5 of you £30 will buy you all a whole day bus ticket for the Lakes and north Lancashire.  Back at the hostel you can look around Historic Kendal, see where Wainwright lived and visit the Kendal Museum where he worked.
