Dunfield House

…Sounds more like a Jane Austen adaptation than an activity centre…

New to us here at Independent Hostels UK but hardly new to accommodating groups, Dunfield House could be your first choice base next time you need to host a large gang. Right on the Welsh border – honestly it couldn’t be closer – in lovely hilly Herefordshire, it has been hosting activities for more than 50 years.

Dunfield House is a 19th century house set in 15 acres of landscaped lawns, woodlands and streams. Great tall ceilings and wide halls, huge bay windows looking out over the grounds. Sounds more like a Jane Austen adaptation than an activity centre doesn’t it? But let me assure you if you try all the facilities in an empire line dress and a bonnet you might get some funny looks.

They are geared towards playing host to huge groups: school trips, youth clubs, church groups, Scouts – that sort of thing. The main house will house 73 and The Stables annex takes 22. Both in clean, modern, comfortable dorm-style bunk rooms. The catering is, by all accounts top notch, meaning someone else worries about replenishing all the energy used on the on-site facilities. A quick list: heated swimming pool, campfire areas, sports pitches, adventure playground, games room. And that’s without leaving the grounds!

If you’re not yet convinced, take a look at their website and enjoy the photos of the glorious landscape.
