Corran House Hostel

Explore Oban and the area

Oban’s a fascinating place. There’s all the obvious stuff which you can take in as you gaze around the bay from the seafront esplanade in front of Corran House Hostel.  The busy little fishing boats. The cluster of buildings. One of the Ferries out to Mull and the Inner Hebrides dwarfs the other craft. The snow covered mountains on all sides reflected in the bay waters. The sea air smell, which has us inland types taking deep satisfying breaths.

But there’s all those other details too, some more hidden than others. What about McCraig’s tower which peeks out behind the town? Built to mimic Rome’s Colosseum giving unemployed builders work during tough times. One of Scotland’s oldest whisky distilleries nestles under the cliff and offers tours. The coast is rich in fascinating wildlife – seals, birdlife, otters, maybe even whales. Oban sometimes basks in the title ‘Seafood Capital of Scotland’, explore the sea front to find somewhere to test that claim.

With amazing views over the water of this ‘little bay’ (the meaning of Oban in Gaelic), Corran House could be the best place to explore the town and then to stretch your wings and explore the wider area.
