A hostelling legend

…stunning scenery…and that warm light from the window to return to…

Look at the picture alongside this ‘natter’. I’ll bet that’s a good indication of what people who have visited Gerry’s Hostel have felt. The sun dropping behind the mountains, a cold night just starting to bite, a warm light welcoming from the window and the hope of a convivial evening inside.

Gerry’s Hostel is apparently legendary. Its eponymous founder was as rugged and irascible as the surrounding countryside. Yet, judging by the comments and memories posted online, just like the highlands – he had his devotees. Now run by Gerry’s son, it advertises a log fire and wifi – so maybe some of the rougher edges have been smoothed away. Having said that – we find ourselves in the Scottish Highlands  surrounded by stunning scenery: moorland, lochs, forests and peaks with the opportunites for close wildlife encounters right from the doorstep. There’s walking, climbing, fishing, cycling and any amount of other outdoor activities drawing you on and that warm light from the window to return to…
