Scottish Independent Hostel in the Southern Uplands

Moffat Independent Hostel is a friendly, family run, luxury hostel that has been set up with the outdoor enthusiast in mind. Moffat is quaint town in the heart of the Southern Uplands and is a popular stop on a number of Britain's best long distance biking and hiking trails, including the Southern Upland Way, the Annandale Way, and the John o’Groats to Land’s End cycling route. It also provides the perfect base for exploring this beautiful and often forgotten part of Southern Scotland, with it's castles, forests, waterfalls, lochs and vast expanse of wilderness.

Opened in 2022, the hostel is bright and spacious. There are 20 beds across 7 rooms with a mix 4 bed dorms, quads, twins and one double, all ensuite. Book by the bed, the room or take over the whole hostel. Facilities include a well equipped communal kitchen, a lounge/diner, games room, large drying room, large secure garage for cycle, motorbike, kayak storage and a bike wash area. Outside there is a paved patio area with seating and wonderful views to the hills beyond and parking for 8 cars. You can buy basic provisions from the hostel reception, while a 10 min walk takes you to the centre of Moffat with its shops, pubs & restaurants.

All bedding is provided. Sorry no stag or hen parties and no noise after 10pm.

    Moffat Independent Hostel is just a few minutes from junction 15 on the A74 (M). One hour’s drive south of Glasgow, 1.5 hours from Edinburgh. The entrance to the hostel is at the Well Road / Ballplay Road intersection (right by the bridge over the burn).
  • Public Transport :

    By rail: Nearest station Lockerbie, (15 miles south of Moffat). Regular trains from Edinburgh & Glasgow, plus direct trains from many cities including London (4 hours) & Manchester (3 hours). From Lockerbie the regular 380 minibus travels directly to Moffat, (30 mins). By bus: Edinburgh- Moffat, 101 bus. Glasgow-Moffat, X74 bus. Both take approx 90 mins.

Calling All Road Cyclists! Take on the Moffat Triskelion: 2 days / 250km

Moffat Independent Hostel (Dumfriesshire, Southern Scotland) is delighted to be running its first ever guided ride of the Moffat Triskelion from Friday 30th August to Sunday 1st September 2024. The Triskelion is a series of three circular road cycling routes totalling 250km which showcases some of the best scenery and quiet open roads that Scotland has to offer! Sign up now for a three-night, 2-day guided road cycling adventure for just £200 per person.

– Prices will be from £200 per rider
– Price includes ride briefing and welcome dinner on Friday, 2 x cooked breakfasts (veggie options available), and two days guiding
– Saturday’s ride will be the West Loop (100km) and Sunday’s ride will be the North and South East loops (150km)
– Accommodation is included in the price and will be at Moffat Independent Hostel (Friday/Saturday/Sunday nights)
– Prices are based on single berths in shared 4-bed dorms with en suite facilities. Groups of 3+ riders will be able to take private use of a room.
