News & Offers
“…the loveliest place we have ever stayed…”
Hudsales Camping Barn, on Thornthwaite Farm near Kesket Newmarket in Cumbria, describes itself as simple accommodation. Sometimes camping barns remind us that they are ‘stone tents’ with only the most basic facilities. Hudscales offers more than that, with electricity, toilet facilities and a shower. You still have to bring your own bedding and cooking equipment but warmth is supplied by a lovely log burning stove and electric heaters.
But as they say on Channel 4, “Location, location, location.”

The location isn’t the only thing to be appreciated by visitors, though.

Hudscales Barn, part of the Lakeland camping barn network
Hudscales Barn is one of 17 camping barns in the Independent Hostels network. The camping barns were set up by the Youth Hostel Association 20 years ago to provide simple accommodation in rural areas for walkers and cyclists. The Lakeland barn network was formed 10 years ago by a group of Lake District camping barns who left the YHA network. The YHA have now withdrawn their support for nearly all camping barns and the most complete record of EX-YHA camping barns is available here on the Independent Hostel Guide website.
