Off-grid bothy on the Isle of Ulva’s wild coastline
Bearnus Bothy has been lovingly renovated using repurposed materials and items washed ashore by the sea. It is one of the last remaining traditional island dwellings, alongside the Main House on Ulva.
The bothy sits alone in a secluded bay on the coast. It is reached by a 5-mile walk along a rough track from Ulva Ferry, with a further mile to the Isle of Gometra.
Off-grid and wonderfully remote, Bearnus Bothy offers the chance to experience simple living surrounded by an abundance of wildlife. White-tailed Eagles, Otters, Seals, and Red Deer can all be seen in the area.
The accommodation reflects the rugged nature of traditional island life.
Tap water is supplied directly from the nearby burn and should be boiled before drinking.
You are welcome to cook and heat washing water on the open fire or wood-burning stove. Pans and kettles are provided, although you may prefer to bring a camping stove and gas for preparing meals. All cooking and eating utensils are supplied.
Please bring your own sleeping bags. The bothy has two single beds in the bedroom. There are also two additional fold-out beds and several mattresses.
Access to the bothy requires a 5-mile walk from Ulva Ferry while carrying your kit. The ferry operates from April to September on weekdays between 9am and 5pm, and additionally on Sundays from June until the end of August. The ferry does not operate on Saturdays.
It is possible to arrange collection of luggage and supplies from the Boathouse on Ulva (at the ferry landing). This service costs £30 one way or £45 return.
