Group mountain hostel on Helvellyn in the Lake District
The beautiful stone building was home to Greenside lead and silver mine offices and workshops in the 1840s. A hostel since the 1970s, it was closed some 10 years ago, in dire need of much love. The current owners bought it a couple of years ago and have completely renovated it. It's now modern where it needs to be, harks back to its origins where it can, and has a few quirks here and there. The perfect ambiance for a great stay.
With 28 beds across 4 rooms, Almond Lodge is the ideal base for groups of walkers, climbers, runners, cyclists or wild swimmers who want a bit more comfort than the traditional, basic hostel accommodation - there is even a bath and a dishwasher! It's also the perfect bolt-hole for groups of friends/family who want to escape the rat race for a few days.
Facilities include: Commercial style kitchen, fully equipped to cater for 30. Separate dining room. Cosy lounge with fierce log burner. Map/planning room. Bunks with super comfortable full size mattresses. 4 bathrooms either en suite or next to the bedroom - 4 powerful showers and a bath. Drying room. Ample parking. Plus breathtaking views in every direction.
The local village of Glenridding has a couple of shops and a variety good pubs and restaurants. Plus there are large supermarkets in Penrith a 30 min drive away, some of which do online delivery to the Lodge.
BYO bedding. Dogs welcome by arrangement. Available only on a sole use basis.
