Black Rocks, a locally iconic grit stone outcrop sculpted by the weather, on the edge of the picturesque town of Wirksworth.
The pretty market town of Wirkworth makes a great base for exploring the Derbyshire Dales and the Peak District. Black Rocks, is popular with climbers who love the multitude of gritstone routes. Families like to explore the rocks and pick crystals up from the paths. The Rocks look out over the village of Cromford, famous for the first cotton mills and given World Heritage Status. The High Peak Trail, a cycle and walking path on an old railway, passes by Wirksworth just below Black Rocks and there are spectacular views of the Derwent valley and Matlock . There is plenty of scope for walking in the Black Rocks area, which stretches right down to High Peak Junction to meet the Cromford canal. Ideal for circle walks and bike rides. There is also a fixed orienteering course and forest trails in the surrounding woods, a small cafe and public toilets.
