Duddon Valley is a hidden gem, don’t spoil it by telling everybody!
You think you’re familiar with The Lake District? Do you know the hidden gem that is the Duddon Valley? High Wallabarrow Camping Barn sits here at the end of a quiet no-through road. High Wallabarrow, despite sounding like a cattle station in the Australian outback, is actually a traditional hill farm specialising in Herdwick sheep and Galloway cows. It is owned by the national trust and the 17th century farmhouse has been renovated to a beautiful standard without losing any of its period charm. Look at the website pictures and you’ll see stone floors downstairs, a wood burning stove, scrubbed wooden floors upstairs and exposed beams and whitewashed walls enough to make Kevin McCloud go weak at the knees. That is not to say that High Wallabarrow is for the glamping crew, oh no! It does have a well equipped kitchen, but the sleeping accommodation is proper camping barn stuff.
But you’ll soon be heading off, Wainwright and OS map in hand. There are great walks right from the door. Caw and Dow crag are beckoning, Harter Fell too. So much to explore and then you get to retire back to this quiet, quiet nook in the evening.
