The Langdales (home of the Great Langdale Bunkhouse) have long been a favourite of visitors to The Lake District, myself included. Away from busy, busy Ambleside, with little more than a cluster of buildings, a wee church and the most convivial pubs, Great Langdale sits at the head of a valley surrounded by impressive and inviting mountains. The Langdale Pikes – a name to water the mouth of any budding Wainwright. Pike of Stickle, Loft Crag, Harrison Stickle and Pavey Ark: their names are as craggy and tough as the peaks themselves.
The Bunkhouse has 5 rooms of between 2 and 8 beds – fitted out to a high standard, but no communal dining or cooking space. I might see that as an invitation to sample the delights of nearby New Dungeon Ghyll or The Stickleback Tavern.
As I write this (late October) I have just returned from a Lakeland trip and still have the clear memory of brown, broken late season heather; twiggy purple heather; icy tarns high up over precipitous valley drops; and most of all the jagged dinosaur-backs of the high peaks.
