I visited Elterwater Hostel on a spring day when the hostel was busy with individuals, couple and small groups. Each party was having their own adventure and in the evening the groups intermingled swapping stories and information. Some self catered and other were enjoying meals provided by the hostel cook. The breakfast was particularity tempting with a good choice of breads, pastries, fruits and cereals, and that was before your ordered your bespoke fry–up and toast and jam.
The breakfast tables were laid out with peoples names, ensuring no one ate alone. Everyone sat with their friends and conversations sprang up between the groups. Can you image that happening at a B&B ? We shared our table with a couple who were walking the Cumbria Way. It was interesting to hear about the other long distance walks they had done and we told them about our trip to Keswick Mountain Festival planned for the day. Other people at the hostel were on cycle touring holidays, or using the accommodation a base for exploring the Lakes. There were quite a few open water swimmers too, who were taking part in The Big Swim on Windermere Lake.
Elterwater Hostel is set in the Langdale Valley, an iconic area of the Lake District. There are nine long distance walks passing within a km of the hostel includsing the West Moorland Way and one of the routes of the Coast to Coast walk. The Langdale Mountains and fells provide challenging and easy walking. The hostel is in the centre of the village of Elterwater, which has a village shop and a pub. The roads so quiet even the sheep feel at home roaming them!
So why is Elterwater Hostel so much better then a B&B or a holiday cottage ? It has got to be the team of knowledge friendly staff who taken a genuine interest in each guest and share their love of the Lake District.
