The Old Red Lion.
The Old Red Lion at Castle Acre shares the most iconic of British pub names. Allegedly named after the coat of arms of John of Gaunt, of the house of Lancaster, it has historic associations with that great soldier. The enchanting town of Castle Acre is so named as it lies within the walled bailey of the 11th Century Norman castle.
Yet the Old Red Lion really bucks that historical trend, while keeping the tradition of hospitality. Not only can guests stay in private rooms or dormitories, choose from the exclusively vegetarian menu, but can also join in with weekly yoga sessions or a longer retreat.
The Guardian travel Writer Dixie Wills wrote, “Is it a B & B? Is it a hostel? Is it a retreat centre? Well it appears to take the best of all three. This is clearly what accommodation should be about.” Which says it better than I can.
