Tintagel is a small village located on the north coast of Cornwall, England. According to Arthurian legend, Tintagel Castle is believed to be the place where King Arthur was conceived. The ruins of Tintagel Castle, perched on a dramatic cliff overlooking the sea, add to the mystique.
This is what I (Bronia, social media manager at Independent Hostels) and my friend Lily (tiktok content creator at Independent Hostels) got up to during our stay.
Stay
Dolphin backpackers Tintagel – We stayed at John’s lovely little hostel located close to the centre of Tintagel. The hostel sleeps 16 and attracts a variety of walkers and explorers. There is a spacious communal area and always someone to talk to.
Explore
The castle – We did not visit Tintagel Castle as you can view it from either side and also go underneath it through Merlin’s Cave.
Camelots Castle – Camelot’s castle is a medieval looking castle which was built fairly recently by a scientologist, Donald trup supporting millionaire. It towers above the landscape and has incredible views of the sunset. It is worth visiting for a coffee or a beer just to marvel over the décor and the rather controversial imagery they display in the lobby.
South West Coast Path – This long-distance walk is easily accessible from the hostel. You don’t have to walk far to experience incredible views. We were inspired to come back one day and walk more of the path.
Trebarwith Beach – This beach is an hours walk along the South West Coast Path from Tintagel. It is a stunning beach with lots to explore – big waves for surfing and body boarding, rockpools to explore and expansive sand. We spend most of our time looking into the little stream that flowed between the rocks and into sea and reading our books while sunbathing.
Eat
Cornish pasty – I tried my first Cornish pasty in Tintagel, it was delicious and filling!
Blackberries on the walk home – After walking home from the beach one day, we came across blackberry bushes. It’s always fun to have a little forage while you are hiking. Just ensure you are 100% certain you have correctly identified what you are about to eat.
The pub above Trebarwith Beach – After visiting Trebarwith beach, we headed to the pub that overlooks the beach. It has amazing views and is the perfect place to watch the tide come in.
