A unique welcome to the small community on this beautiful island.
The island of Rousay is a paradise for walkers and birdwatchers, with numerous footpaths and a thriving bird reserve. It boasts some of the best-preserved archaeological sites in northern Scotland, set amid spectacular scenery rich with wildlife, plants, and flowers. The island’s small, friendly community offers visitors a genuinely warm welcome.
Rousay Hostel is close to the pier, where the roll-on, roll-off ferry provides regular daily services to Rousay, Egilsay, and Wyre. This makes it an ideal base for exploring this remarkable group of islands, often called the “Egypt of the North” for their wealth of archaeological treasures.
Set on a working organic farm, the hostel is within easy walking distance of shops, a restaurant and the pub. The well-equipped hostel offers two dormitories and one single room, along with showers, a kitchen, and laundry facilities. A campsite sits next to the hostel, and campers are welcome to use the hostel’s amenities.
Walk among the wildlife on the RSPB reserve, home to red-throated divers, hen harriers, and merlins. Wander along dramatic cliffs as guillemots, fulmars, and kittiwakes wheel overhead. Cycle the island circuit, or take part in the Rousay Lap half marathon held every August. After a day of adventure, return to the hostel—Orkney’s first independent hostel, established in 1993—for a comfortable and relaxing stay.
Seasonal organic produce from the farm may be available to buy, and bikes can be hired directly from the hostel.
