Shielings Holidays Bunkhouse, Mull.

There’s enough there to keep me and my binoculars busy all week.

With the chilly mist descending outside my window, I cast my mind forward to summer – or at least to warmer days. When the cold and dark doesn’t limit my outdoor time quite so much, and the call of the woodburning stove is silent, I might think of a break on one of the Scottish Islands. Why not Mull?

If you leave your car in Oban and take the ferry, The Sheilings might be one  of the first things you see as you draw in to Craignure.  An immaculate holiday park with a collection of glamp-y ‘shielings’ to stay in as well as cottages and camping. Browse their website and you’ll see what I’m talking about. The owners are friendly and knowledgable about the island and its attractions. A great place to base yourself.

Mull is pulling at me because of the wildlife. A brief glimpse of an otter in the River Eden in Cumbria, circling red kites in central Wales, porpoises off the Black Isle have all been the crowns on top of various holidays. Mull might offer me even more. A quick bit of research tells me that The Isle of Mull is home to otters, puffins, white-tailed and golden eagles, dolphins, basking sharks and owls of various species. There’s enough there to keep me and my binoculars busy all week.

I’ll bet I’m not the only person wondering forward to a summer break. The Shielings, in fact the whole of Mull, are likely to be popular during the holiday season.I’d better make my booking now while I’m thinking on. You should too.
