Formerly Bretton Youth Hostel in the Peak District

Perched at 1200 feet above sea level, Bretton Hostel (formerly YHA Bretton Youth Hostel) sits in three acres of meadows and small copses on Bretton Edge, near historic Eyam in the heart of the Peak District National Park.

The hostel feels remote, surrounded by fields with glorious far-reaching views over the gritstone edges and moors of the Dark Peak to the north and the White Peak's limestone plateau to the south. The sense of space and tranquillity is immense, making it a perfect place for winding down in, or as a base for the fabulous outdoor activities the Peak District has to offer. Walks and cycle rides to suit all straight from the door, numerous climbing crags within a 10 mile radius of the hostel, paragliding on Eyam and Bradwell Edges, caving in Stoney Middleton and beyond. Tourist attractions in Hathersage, Castleton, Bakewell and Buxton are all within easy travelling distance.

The hostel sleeps 17 in 3 bunk-bed dormitories, it has a fully equipped self-catering kitchen, living/dining room with french doors on to sunny south facing patio and a ground floor washroom block housing 2 showers, 3 toilets/basins and a drying room. Free WiFi but no TV. Bottom sheet, pillow and pillowcase provided, but bring your own bedding and towels. Cleaning equipment, tea towels and toilet roll provided. The hostel is heated by wood burning stove and infra-red radiant heaters, which, together with 16 solar panels, help reduce its carbon footprint.

A timber frame studio in the grounds provides additional recreational space to relax in and take in the views, or it can be used as a workshop space for group activities and courses.

Secure bike store. On site parking for up to 6-8 vehicles.

Available all year round for groups wanting sole use of the facilities. Individuals and small groups welcome from May to September on Sundays - Thursday nights only.

Up to 2 dogs welcome with prior notice when booked for sole use, but must be kept on a lead whilst in the hostel grounds.

Characterful 16th century inn within 5 minutes walking distance. Local shops and two other pubs a short drive away.

    Grid reference SK 200780. What3Words: mime.cubes.headsets. From the A623 (Baslow to Peak Forest) take the turning signposted Foolow. In Foolow turn left opposite the Bulls Head Inn and first right onto Bradshaw lane (signposted Bretton). Follow the lane to Bretton Edge. Turn left through wooden gate opposite white house (Bretton Mount) and down the field track to the hostel. From Sheffield take A625 and B6521 to Grindleford. Turn right onto B6001 (signposted Hathersage) and fork left up Sir William Hill Road. Just before it drops down into Eyam, turn right (signposted Bretton). Follow the edge and 50 metres past the Barrel Inn, just opposite white house on left (Bretton Mount), turn right through wooden gate and down the field track to the hostel.

Bretton Hostel and the Plague village of Eyam

In 1660 the village of Eyam was stuck by the plague and went into isolation. When the plague was at its height villagers buried their dead in the gardens of their cottages and four of these grave remain at Bretton Hostel, surrounded by the meadows and moors of the dark peak. Bretton Hostel and the plague village of Eyam are a ready made holiday, with a world of interest and education in the very fabric of the village, gorgeous countryside to explore and comfortable self-catering accommodation.
